 Part-Time Library Assistant

The Library Assistant provides patrons with services and information. Details and other duties are described below.

Schedule: ​12 to 16 hours per week, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. Some Saturdays required, 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

​

Salary - $12.30/hour

 

General Duties

 

General duties of the Library Assistant may include any or all of the following:

  • All Circulation Desk duties including checking in and out materials; maintaining patron records; registering new patrons and explaining library policies.

  • Assisting patrons with reference questions and readers’ advisory.

  • Providing technological assistance to patrons, including computer help, printing and faxing.

  • Maintaining cash records and reconciles cash drawer at the end of the day.

  • Assisting patrons with accessing eBooks and eAudiobooks.

  • Shelving materials and maintaining neatness. 

  • Compiling and keeping appropriate statistics and records.

  • Generating and promoting children, teen, and adult programming.

  • Creating displays and bulletin boards.

  • Contacting patrons regarding overdue materials.

  • Processing new materials.

  • Maintaining the library’s cleanliness - vacuuming, dusting, cleaning windows and bathroom, taking out the trash; as well as ensuring safe entry by shoveling snow and de-icing as necessary.

  • Performing minor repairs on damaged materials.

  • Performing Inter-Library Loan searches and requests for our patrons and filling other libraries’ requests.

  • Performing opening and closing procedures.

  • Enforcing conduct policies.

  • Maintaining familiarity with library databases and promoting database usage.

  • Other duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications

 

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Excellent customer service skills

  • Creativity

  • Computer and data entry skills with a high degree of accuracy using Microsoft Office and Google Drive (spreadsheets, word processing, and email.)

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and problem solving abilities

  • Ability to organize and prioritize tasks as necessary

  • Ability to work unsupervised

 

Desired Qualifications

 

  • Familiarity with library methods and procedures

  • Proficient in the use of social media platforms to promote library programs and events

  • Experience with Canva, Publisher and/or other graphic design software for creating flyers and other marketing materials

  • Experience in creating educational and/or entertaining programs for teens, kids, or adults 

 

Physical Demands of the Position

 

  • Lifting and carrying - 50 pounds or less

  • Good hearing and vision

  • Climbing, reaching, stooping

  • Pushing and pulling objects weighing 60-80 pounds
